A talk by Munir Nuseibah
Many describe the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as complicated, and prefer to take a distance from it. The complex aspects of the conflict are normally linked to ancient history, religious theories, and even conflicting narratives on recent history. However, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has a human rights angle that can be seen through a universal standards perspective and therefore be less controversial. This perspective's universality does not abide by ideological and religious discourses, and therefore succeeds to create a universal movement against Israel's human rights violations, that even includes coalitions between Israeli and Palestinian human rights organizations.
The talk will present the Palestinian-Israeli conflict from this perspective, and show how Israel has been establishing its national goals through systematic violation of human rights. These violations are divided into two categories. The first is violations that aim at changing the facts on the ground in terms of demography and space; while the second is to keep the Palestinian population under control. This talk will skim through examples of the two categories, and will shed light on the universal effort to confront them, which includes Palestinian and Israeli contributions.
Munir Nuseibah is a PhD candidate at the University of Westminster in London, researching remedies to ethnic cleansing in International law. Before his research project in London, he had been a co-founder and the coordinator of Al-Quds Human Rights Clinic, which is a unit in Al-Quds University's Law school that teaches human rights advocacy to students through theory and practice. Munir also worked in a law firm in Jerusalem, and participated in several research projects and conferences on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict from international legal perspective.
